What are ridge forks?
A foreign word to some, especially if you’ve never dealt with replacing or repairing a pitched roof before.
Ridge forks are actually a type of roof tile made specifically to enclose the highest part of a pitched roof.
A pitched roof has at least two sloping surfaces and they are connected and waterproofed at the top by these special roof tiles. They are special in that these roof tiles are curved in length and are used to cover the ridge of your roof.
Ridge means “the upper edge of a roof” and the term frost means “something that sticks out or is in front.
Every roof is unique and then there are many different types of ridge forks to make all possible connections so that your roof is always nicely sealed.
For example, there are types that cover roof sections of the same slope, such as the semicircular ridge frost, balloon frost, orbital frost or saddle frost.
There are also types that overlay multiple roof sections of different slopes, such as the corner pitch frost. And of course, each type also has associated end pieces and finish pieces.
Just like the roof tiles, they can be made of different materials, usually these are plastic, copper or zinc. Choosing matching ridge cappings with the roof tiles also ensures that the ridge cappings always fit properly and ensures that the roof is one beautiful and even whole!

Ridge forks may simply be old and worn. Older ridge frosts are usually made of clay, ceramic or concrete, so they can become porous after many years of standing in all weathers.
Located on the upper part of your roof, they receive all weather conditions, so it’s not surprising that ridge vents take a lot of abuse and eventually become corroded. The cement they are attached with can also corrode and become porous.
Ridge vents and roof tiles can become loose and shift. They crack, crumble, and can allow moisture to pass through. When ridge vents are no longer watertight, it can lead to extensive damage and soaring costs.
It is therefore wise to have a roof inspection done regularly. This is because roofers know exactly where the weak points of your roof are located and always check for general wear and tear and loose parts.
